Florida Education Institute’s Medical Billing and Coding program covers both coding and billing skills, preparing students for a career in an in-demand medical profession.

Over the course of 10 months*, students will learn to organize and analyze information including patient records, insurance reimbursements, and coding guidelines to optimize physician payments.

What do Medical Billers and Coders Do?

Medical billers and coders have the responsibility of documenting a patient’s encounter with the physician or medical facility in order to assign the correct codes using the coding systems. Claims are then created and submitted to insurance companies for proper reimbursement of services rendered.

Medical Billing Responsibilities:

  • Process and follow up with insurance claims
  • Review and interpret medical billing documents
  • Submit bills to insurance companies and other payers
  • Communicates with insurance and healthcare professionals
  • Processes payments and handle the collections process

Medical Coding Responsibilities:

  • Translate healthcare diagnosis, procedures, and medical services into reimbursement codes
  • Review, interpret, and process important medical documents
  • Ensures codes are assigned correctly using coding systems such as CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II
  • Work as liaison between health provider and billing offices
  • Verifies care provided for coding purposes
  • Appeals denied claims
