Often a blueprint or design specification must be followed to install or repair the various HVAC systems that they might encounter. Other duties include connecting water supply lines and fuel lines to their proper systems, cleaning and inspecting air ducts, and other such tasks.

They can also run tests on the individual components that make up a system to check and inspect the customers’ HVAC system in order to replace or repair what is broken or worn. This encompasses the main part of they do.

That answers part of the question about what HVAC technicians do, but there is more.

HVAC technicians also get trained in some other parts and equipment, like water-based heating systems or solar panels. They can also use a variety of tools, like pipe cutters and basic hand tools. To test and install more complex system parts, they can use sophisticated tools like a carbon monoxide tester, or an acetylene torch.

They also get trained on how to handle and dispose of fluids according to government regulations regarding refrigerants, which can be a hazard in many cases.

Your typical HVAC technician works under a service contract, providing regular maintenance or heating and cooling for their systems. They can work for a company, or work freelance, depending on their area, and skill set.
